Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Maverick Industries ET-73 Maverick RediChek Remote Wireless Smoker Thermometer

Customer Review: Solid Performer
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been using my ET-73 for over two years, which adds up to hundreds of hours of use. I've used it for about a dozen cooks that have gone over the 12-hour mark (whole pork shoulders & full-packer briskets) and countless shorter sessions of an hour or two each. The ET-73 has endured several rainstorms, both during use and afterward, and it has never missed a beat. I have only replaced the batteries once, and I am still using the original temperature probes.

The ET-73 is not flawless--it's just a lot better than most of the competition. The first flaw is the bogus claim of 100 feet of communication range. I find that the communication range between the main unit and the remote is about 40 feet maximum through open air. Sometimes I can get reception beyond that distance (I think I've had it over 50 feet at times), but it usually drops out at some point during the cook and then I have to cycle the power off/on on the main unit to restore communication with the remote. Staying within about 40 feet outdoors, or 25-30 feet (and one wall) if the remote is indoors will yield fairly stable communication without the need to re-connect.

The mounting/hanging bracket that comes with the main unit may or may not be helpful for you. I had some success using it as a stand on one of my grills that has an attached shelf. Using it as a hanging bracket (to hang the unit from the lip of the grill) hasn't worked out for me, but it may work for certain grills.

The power switch on the main unit is inconveniently located inside the battery compartment. This means you have to use a coin or fingernail to open the battery door latch & then open the door every time you want to turn the unit on or off. As it turns out, the battery life on this thing is superb, so you don't really need to do that very often. (I've left the main unit turned on for months and it doesn't seem to shorten battery longevity.) Accessing the switch is mostly necessary when you lose radio communication and have to cycle the power to re-establish communication between the two units. I'm OK with the inconvenient location of the switch because I'm quite certain the unit would not have survived all those rainstorms had the switch been located on the exterior.

I find the controls on the remote unit to be quite clunky to operate. If you accidentally set it a degree or two too high, you have to go all the way up to the top of the scale and then start over from the bottom. It doesn't sound that complicated, but it has a range of like 300+ degrees, and the controls are such that I often overshoot the desired temperatures multiple times. On my first couple of overnight cooks, the alarms did offer some peace of mind so that I could get an hour or sleep here and there without worries of runaway temperatures, so I was happy to have that feature. But generally I find the alarms to be too much of a pain and I just don't use them anymore.

In conclusion, the ET-73 is a bit rough around the edges, but I have used at least half a dozen competing products and all of them were absolute garbage in comparison. When/if my ET-72 ever gives up the ghost, I will be buying another.

Description of Maverick Industries ET-73 Maverick RediChek Remote Wireless Smoker Thermometer

Wireless Smoker Thermometer tells the cook the internal temperature of the smoker and the internal temperature of the foods being cooked in the smoker from up to 100 feet away.
Smoking meat and fish properly can take days. So, rather than going out to the smoker to check the temperature time and time again, simply install a RediChek Remote Wireless Smoker Thermometer and rest at ease. This handy thermometer monitors smoker air temperature and food temperature from up to 100 feet away. And, if the temperature drops too low or jumps too high, the RediChek alarm goes off, so there are no spoiled batches-just certainty that every batch of smoked salmon is perfection. The RediChek can also be used with an oven or grill for peace of mind while baking, barbecuing, and broiling and for fewer trips to the kitchen. Best of all, the RediChek is wireless, so installation is a snap. Your purchase includes four AAA batteries for out-of-box use. --Brian Olson
